"Dry-Foot Bwoy" by Louise Bennett-Coverley aka Miss Lou
DISCLAIMER: I am not a native speaker of Jamaican Patois and my pronunciation will be imperfect. If you want to hear this poem read by the author check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/sW9GeQF-1bU/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BajanbloomBloom
Miss Lou was, as I understand it, instrumental in the development of the consciousness that created an independent Jamaican language.

Great vid! One of my linguistics professors told us that the chair before her did research on Romansh (at least I think it was Romansh given that it was an underdocumented language in the Alps). Some of the speakers he worked with lived in such remote, mountainous areas that he had to ski to them, with all of his heavy recording equipment strapped to his back, this was like 20-30 years ago.

Venetian, Sardinian, Sicilian, Tuscan etc have their own historically independent languages that evolved over a 1000 years. The reason is because they were city states with different environmental and ethnic influences. Also influenced by conquering powers. And there are dialects within those territories. Tuscan became Italian by a mere government act and there are distinct Tuscan dialects within Tuscany. When an Italian speaks Italian he or she may speak it with an accent (and/or differently) with a dialect which may involve substitution of words /phrases etc from their local language. A person speaking Friulan which is a Raeto romance language (like Ladino or Romansch); the transference when speaking Italian may be a cleaner less inflected Italian. (My experience is with very old friulan speakers). Although television, schools etc has had an enormous effect of harmonising the Italian language. A German speaker in the very north of Italy speaks Italian also in a particular way. The languages of Italy are dying in many parts of Italy being replaced by Italian spoken sometimes with dialects/accents. There are hold outs. Friulan is taught in schools in Friuli in the middle years. I can also remember being introduced to a web site promoting the Venetian language. (My mother is fruilan and my father is from upper Veneto) But don't confuse historically rich independent languages of the Italian peninsular with mere dialects of Italian. Is Spanish merely a dialect.

in Spain only catalan, basque and galician are protected. Aragonese is basically dying, it is taught in the pyrenees but at the same time its kinda crazy how its ONLY spoken in the pyrenees, it was the language of the kings of one of the most importan kingdoms in europe. It is barely talked about and my family being from there were severly oppressed by Franco's dictatorship, making it seem like a "rural" and "unworthy" language. This is to some extent the case today, people genuinely think aragonese is speaking like someone from the countryside (couldnt be further from the case) but now at least theres an academy that (kind of) protects it, its recognised in Aragón but it SHOULD be taught in school just how they introduced castillian to aragon even though it used to be noones native tongue. Same with asturleonese and its various dialects, its all just so stupid far right parties hate diversity and its sickening. No one would get hurt from making aragonese cooficial in Aragón, we would just preserve a lanmguage, just how Irish people learn Irish even though most of them dont speak it at home

Yes. This phenomenon of minority languages dying is happening everywhere. I blame older people for this. They prioritize children's success over preserving cultural heritage. They believe if they teach the language to their children they will have a harder time learning standard language and since knowing standard language is important in academia they purposefully refuse to teach their children their mother tongue and at the same time get upset that younger people don't speak the local language as much as they do. A great example is when in 19th century Welsh schools and teachers with the support of the parents punished Welsh children who spoke Welsh at school. Children are not to blame here. Only adults who have inferiority complex.

You can only use term ‘turkic’ like kazaks are turkic if you are english speaker. But it their own language and their understanding it is 100% correct saying kazakhs are turks. Turk refers all turkic nations. So kazaks are turks, uzbeks are turks. If you want to differentiate turks according to their current states or their nationality and then you say Turkeye turks or kazaks turks. Or you can say Turkish people for the turks who live in Turkeye.

This actually even gets worse. Because inside Turkey each political faction has a different definition for Turk. For seculars it's like the constitution says they wrote them, but for islamists a Turk must be muslim. For turanists a Turk must be Turkic. Oh yeah, we use Turan actually to refer to broader Turkic nations, but it's ironic that term is Persian.

So I cant imagine how turkish can be muslim ?) Turk only can be tengrist. U can not call yourself turuk and be muslim at the same time. Our ancestors never wanted u to convert to any religion that could separate us from each other. So thats why they were tengrist.

This is how the transition was made from Romanian to Germanic languages? 🤯 Mind boggling. Btw. All romanic languages developed individually from each other out ofba protoromanian language Pre-Latin. It is not true that languages got Latinized. The best example is LaDin and Romanian having almost exactly the same numbers while in Latin is totally different, and while LaDin Dolomites and Romanians never ever met each other. Even more so is Romanian and Aromanian, Istroromanian and other types of Romanian languages from so called Vlachs that never met each other and developed independently of each other. While the romanic words they speak are exactly as in Romanian and not in Latin. What a huge lie they taught us that we were Latinized by the Romans. Romans occupied only 1/4 of Dacia for only 140 years, while the rest of Dacia was free. And yet the whole Dacian territory south from Danube to Nistru, speak Romanian. Romania was under Ottoman and Austria-Hungarian occupation for 500 respectively 300 years and yet no Romanians spoke any of these languages nor do they speak them today. All romance languages developed from a romanic language. Even Greek developed from Romaniek. But it was not Latin. Maybe even Rome came into existence due to the tribe with a name Roma. Just like the Gypsies. The whole Europe is colonized by the Dacians and Sarmatians that were the Lost tribes of Dan (Dacians) and the Samaritans. The tribe of Dan must have speak Romanian. As the first Jews in Greece call themselves also Romanians. It is complicated, but we all in Europe are a Semitic population. Dacians and the Sarmatians colonized Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Scandinavia, Danmark, Holland, Ireland and Scotland, as well as Ukraine, Yugo-Slavia, Russia and Greece. Etruscans were Israel lost tribes that fled from Egypt. The tribe of Dan co-existed with Phoenicians. The Jews colonized Iberic Peninsula, France and Wallonia and England. It is a huge mess up. See The Serpent's Trail of the lost tribes of Israel. The lost tribe of Dan. See also The Hebrew Origin of Serbs.
